National Lighthouse Day

Celebrate the Day

On this day in 1789, the US Congress approved an Act “for the establishment and support of lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers.” This commissioned the first Federal lighthouse, which was constructed at the entrance of Chesapeake Bay. Two hundred years later, Congress designated August 7th as National Lighthouse Day. Currently the United States has approximately a thousand lighthouses, as well as light towers, range lights and pier head lights. Michigan has the most lighthouses with over 150 past and present lights. Lighthouses were first built and maintained by the United States Lighthouse Board (1852-1910) followed by the United States Lighthouse Service (1910-1939). Today they are built and managed by the Coast Guard. Here, in Texas, there are 14 ‘light stations.’ “Be a beacon of light to someone!” an old Sunday school teacher once told me. “You must behave like a lighthouse and shine day and night for the goodness of everyone.”
