Today is National Peanut Butter Cookie Day!

Celebrate the Day

Did you know the Aztecs invented peanut butter in the 14th century? Peanut butter cookies came about in the early 1900s when George Washington Carver began promoting the peanut and its many uses. He published three recipes for peanut butter cookies. In 1932, the Schenectady Gazette published the first PB cookie recipe with the criss-crossed fork marks on the top. Today, the criss-crossed fork marks has become an iconic decoration on peanut butter cookies. As with all food-related “Celebrate the Days,” this office will be eating the food we are celebrating— today will be PB cookies.

Here is George Washington Carver’s original recipe:

Peanut Cookies –
3 cups flour
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs
1 cup sweet milk
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 cups ground peanuts

Cream butter and sugar; add eggs well beaten; now add the milk and flour; flavor to taste with vanilla; add the peanuts last; drop cookie dough by the spoonful onto well-greased pans; bake quickly.
